FAQs

  • What should patients and visitors know before surgery?

A nurse will contact you to complete a telephone 20 minute assessment 24 to 72 hours before your scheduled surgery. Have your medical history handy and a list of medications ready to discuss with the nurse. Dietary instructions will be given during this call. Patients also will be given instructions on what medications to take the day of surgery.
  • What should patients and visitors know before the day of surgery?

On the day of the surgery, follow these instructions:
    • If needed, take a medication with a small sip of water.
    • If you have sleep apnea, bring your CPAP machine with you.
    • Wear loose comfortable clothes; button-down shirts work best.
    • If you wear a hearing aid or dentures, bring storage cases for them.
    • Remove all body piercings.
    • Do not wear makeup or nail polish.
    • Do not wear perfume, scented body lotion, or hair spray.
    • No candy or chewing gum on the day of surgery.
    • Do not drink alcoholic beverages the night before surgery.
    • All valuables and jewelry - such as watches, wedding rings, necklaces, and earrings - should be left at home.
    • You must be accompanied by a person over the age of 18 who will be able to drive you home and assist at home for the first 24 hours after surgery.
