Children Visitors under 12

With the patient’s comfort and infection prevention in mind, children under the age of 12 are discouraged from visiting UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Children under the age of 12 must have an adult present at all times in all areas of the hospital, including lobbies, rooms, restrooms, cafeteria and corridors.

  • What should a patient know before, during and after a visit?


    When coming to the hospital for an inpatient stay, please check in with the admissions office. Bring your insurance card and all necessary paperwork.
    Check with our Wyndham Pittsburgh University Center for discounted extended and short term rates for family members of patients.
  • What can visitors bring and not bring?


    Often visitors are compelled to bring something special for their loved one while receiving care at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Following are a few guidelines to remember:
    • Flowers are allowed in patient rooms, excluding the Intensive Care Unit.
    • Latex balloons are not allowed. Mylar balloons are permitted.
    • It is advised to check with the nurse before bringing a patient anything food and beverages.
